Residency Permit Options
Choosing the right permit for you and your family to live, work or retire in Mauritius is an important first step in your Plan B decision-making process.
There are several options available ranging from permanent residency to 10-year renewable permits.
The easiest and most hassle-free option is to invest in property in Mauritius to a minimum value of USD 375 000. This will secure permanent residency for you, your spouse and your dependent children up to the ages of 24 years. This residency permit is permanent without any requirements for ongoing renewals. The only criteria are that you do not sell your property and that the property must be located within a Property Development Scheme (PDS) or a Smart City.
Residency by investment is another great option for business owners: investors must demonstrate a net asset value of USD 50 000 and they are required to invest USD 50 000 in Mauritius. The permit enables them to live in Mauritius for 10 years and the renewing criterion is that their business needs to produce an annual income of MUR 4 million as from year 3 of their investment.
Self-employed entrepreneurs are eligible to apply for the entrepreneur permit with an investment of USD 35 000 into their own new business venture in Mauritius. This permit affords them 10 years of residency and it is renewable on the proviso that their business generates an annual income of MUR 800 000 per annum from year 3 onwards.
The retirement permit is gaining in popularity, as retirees seek the safety and tranquility of this idyllic island. The retirement permit enables retirees to enjoy 10 years of living in Mauritius, provided that they spend an annual amount of USD 18 000 in the Mauritian economy. Thus, retirees must simply demonstrate their ability to support themselves and they will qualify to retire in Mauritius and enjoy its exceptional lifestyle.
In closing, the Mauritian economy is poised for growth and continues to be one of the most progressive countries in the world, finding innovative ways to attract investment, conduct business seamlessly and procure talent to the island. With its array of permit options, its sunny climate and beautiful beaches, it’s easy to see why Mauritius continues to be one of the most sought-after global destinations for South Africans seeking a Plan B.
